Munitibar- Arbatzegi- Gerrikaitz

A historic place with traces of war, famous for its bombed church and hermitages. It offers a renewable energy centre and hiking on Mount Oiz.
Located at the crossroads between Markina-Xemein, Durango, Lekeitio, Gernika and Bilbao, it is divided into two nuclei, formerly corresponding to two municipalities, which used to have their disputes, and met at the Zubialde bridge to resolve them. During the year 1882, the municipalities were defeated by the debts created by the wars, and began to worry about the children and their education, as they could not afford to pay the teachers. Such hardship meant that the two municipalities, Gerrikaitz and Arbatzegi, began to talk to each other and ended with their integration into a single municipality. The wars have left more traces in this small municipality. During the Civil War, on 25 April 1937 to be precise, it was bombed by planes hitting the parish church of San Vicente. One bomb broke the bell tower, the next one fell on the roof and a shell dropped against the Nationalists hit the south wall breaking the altar and another one broke the portico. In addition to this church there are more hermitages in Munitibar, the hermitage of San Cristobal is on Mount Oiz at 791 metres above sea level. San Cristobal cures ear ailments. Several windmills, which generate electricity, are located on this mountain. Relaxation area: Bengola At the foot of Mount Oiz is Bengola, the Centre for Renewable Energies, at one of the two ends of the Lea trail. It is a centre for the interpretation of renewable energies, built in an old mill and with a large recreation area. Munitibar Town Council website
