Discover caves with ancient human history, a 12th century church, and a 16th century hermitage with a miraculous well that cures skin diseases.
History Atxurra, Armiña, Lamiña II and Goikolau are the caves where history begins with the first signs of humans in the area. In addition, a Palaeolithic necklace from the year 2000 BC was found in the Goikolau cave and is on display in the Bilbao Archaeological Museum. The first written records of the municipality date back to the 12th century and correspond to the parish of San Pedro. There are references to the year 1498, with references to the right granted in favour of the Lord of Aranzibia in the patronage of the church. Today the municipality is organised into two areas, the central area around the church and the higher areas where the neighbourhoods of Miloi, Asterrika and Magdalena are located. Relaxation area: Magdalena Hermitage It is a 16th century hermitage. It is believed to have been built on top of an older building, due to the image of a man from the Romanesque period that can be seen on the north façade. The Madalena cross is located in this neighbourhood and about 150 metres away there is a well known as "Sarnapotzu". It is said to heal diseased skin. If we place a handkerchief dipped in the well on the skin and then hang it on a branch in the area, this water works miracles. Berriatua Town Council website
