Lekeitio
This historic place offers Palaeolithic remains, medieval walls and a strong connection with the sea. Of particular note are the centre for the interpretatio...
Street atmosphere
María Díaz de Haro gave Lekeitio its founding charter in 1325, and it became a town.
The first remains were found in the Lumentza cave. This, together with those of Santimamiñe, is the most important site dating from the Upper Palaeolithic period before Romanisation.
In the Middle Ages, for defensive and socio-economic reasons, it was surrounded by a wall, which can still be seen today in several places, such as Pascual Abaroa and Bergara streets...
Lekeitio has always been linked to the sea. It has been the source and destination of fishermen, adventurers and sailors. Men and women have worked at sea and to this day these trades have been transferred and can be visited in the Interpretation Centre of Navigation techniques with visits to the Santa Catalina lighthouse.
Other interesting places to visit are the Sosoaga wine press and the Marierrota tidal mill.
Relaxation area: The Santa Catalina Lighthouse
Today it has been converted into an interpretation centre and can be visited during long opening hours. There we can learn and experience a lot about the sea and fishing. And we can also enjoy the spectacular views from the terrace of the bar, and have a good time. The sunsets there are beautiful.
