Route of the Way of Saint James

Route of the Way of Saint James

The Coastal Way, which runs along the coast of Gipuzkoa to enter the western limits of Bizkaia, is one of the most primitive pilgrimage routes to Compostela. O

After leaving the last Jacobean enclave of Astigarribia in Gipuzkoa and ascending the steep paths of the Arno massif, where the Deba and Artibai rivers divide, the coastal Jacobean route leaves us in Arnoate. For many centuries, Arnoate has been the gateway to the lands of Bizkaia for pilgrims who, coming from all over Europe, opted for the Cantabrian coastal route.

This route, although less mentioned throughout history, must have been safer, and took the first pilgrims to the Galician “Finisterre” during the Muslim domination.

The Way of St. James in Lea Artibai is full of great little treasures.
